Lélia Matos is a paleoceanographer with a background in Biology and an expert in cold-water coral ecology and biogeochemistry. Her collaboration with the Paleoceanography and Paleoclimate group is over 15 years, during which she developed extensive knowledge on several paleoceanographic proxies and tools. Since her doctoral degree (2017, Bremen University), Dr. Matos has been involved in 6 successfully funded projects and 1 EUROFLEETS+ cruise, 5 of which she was (co-)proponent. Overall, she published 7 articles (3 as first author) in ISI journals, (co-)supervised 4 undergraduate students and received 9 awards/grants. Dr. Matos is an active scientist, with over 30 conference presentations and frequent outreach talks; she's involved in the IMBRSea Master Project, (co-)organized the 2019 National Oceanography Meeting and (for the last 10 years) co-manages her groups' monthly seminars/webinars. She is currently the PI of IRMAPEx, a project that integrates carbon production, export and burial since the last 20 thousand years, to better understand how climate affected carbon sequestration at the Iberian margin. Within her research group OC2, at CCMAR, Lélia Matos is the responsible for cold-water coral geochemistry as a tool to reconstruct the history of the Atlantic Intermediate Circulation for the last hundred-thousands of years.
