Born in Lisbon (Portugal), Manuela David completed her degree in Biology (Scientific Branch) in 1981 at the Faculty of Science, University of Lisbon. In 1982 started as assistant lecturer in the first faculty group at the newly installed Universidade do Algarve. Concluded her PhD in Biological Sciences in 1995; since 2003 she is Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade do Algarve.
She has centred her pedagogic and scientific activity in Plant Biology (Botany, Plant Physiology and Plant Ecology). The scientific activity has been mainly focused on studies of physiology and ecology of plants growing under environmental stress factors typical of the Mediterranean. Since 2006 she holds the position of Curator of the Herbarium at the University of Algarve (ALGU), promoting public awareness of biodiversity and environmental issues, particularly those involving the floristic heritage of the Algarve.
